Best and Worst Movies of 2017 (plus Best TV Series of 2017)
You may disagree with my ratings, but how well do you know yer Red Delicious from yer Pink Lady, yer Valencia from yer Navel – and yer Eureka from yer Meyer, for that matter? And how do you compare between them?
Disclaimer:
- I’ve banged on ad nauseum in previous years about end-of-year best/worst movie lists and why I don’t take them seriously, so I’ll spare yas the rave this year. Just treat my lists as a bit of fun. For me, they function as a quick reference, a reminder of my best and worst movie experiences for a particular year. My crap memory is the main reason I even bother with this annual best-of/worst-of shit. Oh, and please note: some of the films considered are 2016 releases that were released in Australia in 2017.
- As usual, I didn’t see ALL the year’s widely acclaimed flicks, so if something great’s missing from my list hold that sneer. I’ve identified the significant ones I missed at the bottom of the page.
- My viewing is weighted towards arthouse/indie.
- Films in each category are listed in alphabetical order. Ranking them in order of merit makes no sense (apples/oranges; no divulgence of assessment criteria). If you want the reasons behind my assessments you’ll find them in my reviews, which I’ve linked to.
NB: Inclusion in one category does not necessarily preclude inclusion in another.

What, Daddy’s Home 2 didn’t make it? 😀 Best film of 2017 hands down.
Blade Runner 2046 was good.
Also some other good 2017 sci-fi were:
What Happened To Monday
OtherLife (filmed in Perth!)
It Stains The Sands Red (if an offbeat zombie thing is your cup-of-tea heh heh)
Do not even bother with that pretentious pile of vomit “Dumbkirk”! Gah!
Sounds like I really missed something in Daddy’s Home 2. Is there no end to the tragedies of 2017 (well yeah, in a few hours).
Yeah, wish I’d seen Blade Runner 2046.
I thought Otherlife was a good effort, but that it got over-complicated and lost its way in the last 1/4. Dunno why it didn’t get more attention, though. Last bit aside, I thought it was a bloody good effort on a tiny budget.
Haven’t seen What Happened to Monday or It Stains the Sands Red – ta for the tips! Reminds me, The Girl With All The Gifts was another zombie movie I thought far better than most. Really well thought out narrative for a change.
Yeah – beats me why Dunkirk has received such accolades. Left me cold. I really don’t understand how anyone could rate it, yet here we are with a chorus of critics declaring it a masterpiece. Gotta say though, Matt, you and I are not the only inhabitants of the Dunkirk-doesn’t-make-it planet.
