Stan & Ollie is a modest but beautifully crafted and performed film that captures the pathos of the ageing showbiz celebrity whose time has passed, and charts the joys, sorrows and difficulties of maintaining an enduring relationship through thick and thin.
If Beale Street Could Talk is an opportunity missed by writer/director Barry Jenkins, whose main agenda seems to be to stamp the film with his directorial mark. He might have been better served directing more energy towards creating characters of some complexity and fleshing out the narrative.
While not without its flaws, Capernaum is an important film in its disturbing depiction of the lot of migrants and refugees – especially children – battling to survive in unsupportive countries. Worth seeing for the startling performance of the child lead alone.
